Even the most driven and self-motivated people can suffer from the January blues. After the festivities over the last few weeks, there has to be a natural down period. It can’t be Christmas every day, after all.
But there are ways you can combat the blues. January is a time for new beginnings and making important changes to your life.
Last week we talked about our business travel New Year’s resolutions. This week we want to talk about a few ways to combat the January blues.
Make Plans
After the holidays it can seem like there is nothing to look forward to. Summer is months away and the bank account is looking a little bare after Christmas. That doesn’t mean you can’t make plans though. We’re not talking about singular New Year’s resolutions but really ask yourself – what do I want to achieve in 2018? Set achievable goals and set a month by month plan to achieve them.
Book A Bleisure Trip
“Bleisure” (business mixed with leisure) is becoming more and more common. Why don’t you jump on the bandwagon? If you have any business trips this year, then add a few days on for yourself. Whether that means exploring the city you are in or getting some fresh air and becoming one with nature, it could really do you some good and give you something to look forward to in January.
Leave Your Desk at Lunchtime
The January blues can be closely linked to the lack of sunshine you are getting. You go to work in the dark and get home in the dark, and who has time to look out of the window at work? The only time you get to yourself is lunchtime so why not take a walk and get some fresh air. It could have a really positive effect on your mood.
Take Some Time for Yourself
The holidays are a time of giving. You spend all that time and money getting gifts for people and don’t really take time for yourself. You could make a pact in January to take some more time for yourself. Spend time doing what you love and it will boost your mood in no time.
Make Exercise Part of Your Working Day
Okay, the gyms are going to be packed with people fulfilling their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. The reason is, January is a great time to start getting fit. It will improve your mood and really help you combat the January blues. The best way to make sure exercise stick is to make it a part of your day. Find a gym that is on the way to or from your work and make sure you go every day. Alternatively, start running or cycling to work. Just remember to take a change of clothes and a towel!
