Did you know that New Jersey is home to 360 golf courses, the host area of PGA tour tournaments and Amateur tournaments as well? In June the Neshanic Valley Golf Course will be hosting the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. This is the first time the championship tournament has come to Neshanic Valley, a course that was opened in 2004 and has only hosted the golf tournament’s qualifiers.
What does it take to prepare for the expected 156 golfers and influx of several thousand spectators? One of the first items on the agenda is the construction of a 44-foot-long scoreboard and the planning of needed adjustments to the Branchburg golf course once the weather gets warm. Driving ranges have also been covered with tarps to promote better and earlier grass growth.
This tournament is one of 13 USGA national championships that are held annually, and was created in 1977 for public-course players. In order to qualify women must advance through qualifying matches and hold a USGA Handicap Index of 18.4 or lower. Past winners include professional players Michelle Wie and Jody Niemann-Dansie. The Somerset area will make its mark on the map as a sporty place to be to the expected influx of tourists. The county itself is even fine-tuning a network of shuttle buses that will transport players and spectators. Whether you just live in the area, are a golf player who is interested in playing or like to take a spectator stand this promises to be an unforgettable year for the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.
