There is a big difference between traveling on vacation and business trips. When you travel on business, you are expected to be alert and fresh. You are supposed to be able to give your clients the upmost attention. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, all thanks to jet lags.
A study by the National Sleep Foundation revealed that the condition for jet lag is a result of the imbalance in our body’s biological clock. There are further talks of circadian rhythm, hormones, and exposure to sunlight, which we won’t bore you with.
All you need to know is how to prevent jet lag from ruining your business trip.
One of the tricks of you can use to prevent jet lag from ruining your business trip is to pick your flight carefully. Book a flight that’ll allow you rest before arriving at your destination. Time it such that, you’ll arrive in the evening and go straight to your hotel, (maybe grab a light dinner) and get some sleep.
Remember to get a good meal before you board and pack healthy snacks for the flight. If it’s a long flight, remember to pack a neck pillow, comfy socks, light-blocking, and earplugs. You can also pack your own cashmere pashmina in case you don’t get a blanket from the airline.
Dehydration is known to cause fatigue and air in planes can be really dry. Needless to say, you have to keep yourself hydrated all through the flight. Drink plenty of water before and during your trip. Also, don’t forget to pack your saline nasal spray and eyedrops to keep your eyes and nose moist.
Avoid substances that act as diuretics and drain your body of fluid. This include alcohol and caffeine.
Schedule your flight such that you can arrive a day, maybe two, before you have to conduct any business. This way, your body will adjust to the new time zone you’ll have to face any client or business partners.
The trick is to set your watch to the new time zone before stepping into the plane. That way, you’ll start thinking in that time, you’ll start living the new time zone.
Finally, when your plane reaches its destination, remember to get some fresh air. If you arrive during the day, walk around a little and soak up some sunlight. This should help reset the circadian rhythm of your body. Stay away from excess works on your laptops and avoid heavy exercises before bedtime.
IF you arrive very early in the day, do not try to take a nap. It’ll prevent you from getting a normal sleep rhythm early. However, if you have to sleep, make it 30 minutes or less.
