The singer-songwriter affectionately known as “The Boss” by his millions of worldwide fans, is one of the most successful recording artists in music history. Bruce Springsteen has sold over 120 million records, and has earned numerous awards, including 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, and a Academy Award for his song, “Philadelphia”, from the 1993 movie by the same name.
Springsteen was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, about an hour’s drive from MetLife Stadium. He has been in the music business for nearly 50 years and got his start in the music business by performing in a number of New Jersey clubs early in his career. It was during this period as a professional singer that he acquired the nickname “The Boss”, since he was the bandleader who gave his band members their paychecks.
In 1973, he released his debut album, “Greetings from Ashbury Park, N.J. “ and although it didn’t sell more than 250,000 in its first year, was received well by music critics and is now considered to be one of the greatest debut rock albums of all time. But it wasn’t until 1975 that he gained both critical and commercial success with “Born to Run”, an album that is ranked in the top 20 from Rolling Stone magazine’s greatest albums of all time and is listed in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
Since the release of “Born to Run” every subsequent album has been both critically and commercially successful and has demonstrated why Springsteen ranks among his generation’s list of the finest songwriters in the music business. Among his most popular albums are his mega-selling album “Born in the USA,” “The River” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” His greatest hits album is also a multi-platinum selling album and was a #1 album in 16 countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany and Australia.
His long time accompanying band, The E Street Band returns several longtime members to MetLife Stadium, most notably Nils Lofgren, Max Weinberg, Gary Tallent, Steven Van Zandt and his wife Patti Scialfa, who joined his band in 1984. But Springsteen, his band members and his fans all mourned the loss of his saxophonist and original band member Clarence Clemons Jr., who died last year from complications caused by a stroke. Springsteen considered Clemons one of his best friends and has paid tribute to him during the current Wrecking Ball Tour.
The three shows in East Rutherford will be Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s last on the east coast as part of this current tour, making this stop in New Jersey all that much more important.
