Franklin was born in Memphis to highly religious parents. Music became her passion at an early age when she began singing at New Bethel Baptist Church where her father was a preacher. She has been quoted as saying her earliest secular music influences were Dinah Washington and Sam Cooke, both legends in their own right. At the age of 18, she was signed to Columbia Records in 1960. Her recording and release of Otis Redding’s song, “Respect,” took her career to a new level. In fact, it catapulted her to mega-star status. In 1968, she won her first Grammy and she found herself playing sold-out shows all over the world.
In 1980, she signed with Arista Records and worked with renowned music industry expert, Clive Davis. During this time, she worked with many extraordinary talents including Luther Vandross, Elton John, James Brown and George Benson. This was also the same time period when she earned her first Platinum album. Recently, she has worked with hip hop giants such as Sean “Puffy” Combs and Jermaine Dupri.
Franklin has a massive vault of hit singles including, “Respect,” “Chain of Fools,’ “I Say a Little Prayer,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do,” and “Freeway of Love,” just to name a few. She’s had hit songs in many different genres including R&B, soul, funk, jazz, gospel, blues and rock.
The legendary singer has undoubtedly earned her title of the Queen of Soul. She has influenced so many up and coming musicians, and she has placed her mark on the world that will last forever. Franklin received an honorary degree from Princeton University this past June. She accepted her doctorate in music during the legendary school’s 265th annual commencement, where she joined over 2,000 hard working graduates.
